You want to hear a nearly unbelievable story? Buckle up, because this one will tug on your heart strings…
This sweet 4-month-old baby is named Derek. He came to us from a good Samaritan who trapped him at the factory he works at in Newark, New Jersey at the end of October. His Aunt Alyssa just happens to be our resident rescue kitten nurse, and she asked us to step up and help. Socializing fosters, Jenn and Chris, stepped in and offered to see if this boy was still young enough to domesticate him. He was placed in the foster room and given time to decompress with occasional visits from the fosters over his first day there. He was covered in black factory dust and grime, but was not yet ready to be handled for bathing. The foster family has always left one window cracked in the bedroom for fresh air, but on his second night in foster, Derek had other plans. He shimmied his way between the window and the screen, clawed his way out onto the first story roof, and disappeared into the night.
His foster parents were shocked and devastated to say the least, but it was the consensus of the rescue group that he wasn’t about that domestic cat life and yearned for freedom. That first day that he was out, he was in the cold October rain the day before Halloween. Fast forward to late on Halloween night, Jenn went outside to pull her car in from the street. When she stepped outside, she saw a flash - similar to what you might see when a rabbit quickly runs away from you. Upon returning into the home, Jenn had a feeling that she should check the Ring doorbell camera to see if she captured what she saw on camera. Much to her surprise and delight, she spotted Derek was on the front porch investigating the bowl of candy that they had left out for late night trick-or-treaters just moments before Jenn went out to move her car! Realizing that Derek was still nearby, and likely very hungry, Chris and Jenn set up the trap that was left behind by the factory worker with a plate of wet food. At approximately 1:30 in the morning, Derek was successfully trapped and brought back into the house (with all windows closed, of course).
In the month that Derek has been back in foster, he has slowly opened up to the treats, attention, playtime, and finally pets from his foster parents. He has also made friends with a resident cat who is teaching him how to play safely and how to trust the humans who are providing him care. He had his initial visit to the vet, and is healthy and ready to start his journey to his happily ever after!
Derek eats IAMS Healthy Kitten kibble as an all day graze, with ½ can Fancy Feast wet 2x daily. He LOVES Churu treats! He loves all kinds of toys, but especially enjoys interactive ones. He will thrive most in a house with another cat to share a bond with. The most adorable thing about him is his chirpies that he makes when playing, eating, and getting pets!
Derek is not yet neutered, is just beginning his vaccination schedule, was vaccinated for Rabies, is FiV/FeLV negative, and is generally in good health.
