Meet Sonia Begonia 🌸
Some dogs immediately understand that life has just gotten better and they show it through attentiveness, affection, gratitude, and a deep desire to do right by their human. Sonia is that dog to a T. Perfection incarnate. Period.
Her Story:
Sonia was found running as a stray in Alabama with a buddy her same size. She was heartworm positive (now treated and doing great!) and showed signs of having recently had a litter, though no puppies were ever found. At only about two years old, she narrowly escaped a kill shelter thanks to a woman who refused to let her story end there. Her first real experience of safety and love began then and she has been paying it forward ever since. She then found her way into the care of Rosemarie's Rescue Ranch and this is where our leg of the journey began.
What Living With Sonia Is Like:
Sonia is passive, gentle, deeply responsive, and incredibly tuned in to her person. She’ll do anything you ask, not out of fear, but out of trust and a desire to please. The world is still very new to her: cars, wind, birds, the vacuum monster, and unfamiliar noises can be scary but in a week she has made HUGE strides. She needs slow gradual exposure to new things to show her the are safe and a calm, mindful approach outdoors. Because of this, she can be an escape risk if rushed—but with patience, she builds confidence beautifully.
And here’s one of the purest joys of fostering her: Sonia is discovering toys for the very first time and learning to play.
At first, she didn’t seem to know what toys were. Now, she watches my dog closely, takes her lead, and is starting to pick them up herself and hoard them in her crate as if they were a prized commodity. Watching the two of them play together as her confidence grows has been nothing short of magic. She is learning how to be a dog, and she’s doing it quickly. She now runs eagerly up the stairs when initially had to carry her and she'll catch my gaze for approval when at first she looked away. As she realized walks were fun, she put her fear on pause to welcome the fallen snow with a wagging tail and curious abandon. The most beautiful momet was when I realized she was looking to me for reassurance and would wag her tail when she recognized that indeed, "it is ok"... and proceeded to take it all in.
This is an amazing opportunity because while Sonia is estimated to be about two years old, she doesn’t require the intensity of a puppy—yet she still offers all those meaningful “firsts.”
