Midnight didn’t end up on a rescue transport or in a shelter run. He ended up in our arms because someone refused to look away.
A small, trembling black dog was being offered for $20 on a cold NYC street by a homeless man. Someone couldn’t bear to leave him behind—and that decision saved his life.
▪︎ Midnight arrived to us painfully thin, shaking from fear, and with an old, untreated broken leg that had healed at the wrong angle.
▪︎ Our vets say it can’t be fixed now, but Midnight doesn’t know that: he still runs, plays, and hops around happily on three legs when he gets tired. As long as it isn’t hurting him, the surgeon recommends letting him live just as he is.
▪︎ But Midnight’s scars aren’t just on the outside. Somewhere in his past, something happened that left him deeply afraid. He loves his person and bonds fiercely with them—but in a busy household, his fear is so great he’ll bite to protect himself. It isn’t anger. It’s trauma. And it breaks our hearts to watch.
